Add Witness from the Chrome Web Store
The button above opens the listing in a new tab. Click 'Add to Chrome' and confirm the permissions prompt. Nothing to unzip, no developer mode, and Chrome updates the extension for you.

Pin the extension to your toolbar
Open the puzzle-piece menu in Chrome's toolbar and pin Witness. You start every recording yourself, so a visible icon is the difference between a one-click record and a hunt through the menu.

Open ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and press record
Choose the free software identity when prompted. Your first Witness Record is signed on your device before you export anything.
That is the whole install. On the free tier every record is signed locally and hash-chained, so any later edit is detectable — free proves nothing was changed. The Verified tier adds an email-checked identity that proves it was you.
Activate your AIhood dongle
Choose the kit for your operating system and processor. Connect your USB security key before starting, install the local software, then follow the activation window.

Linux
Mac: Apple menu → About This Mac shows Apple Silicon or Intel. Windows: Settings → System → About shows your system type. Linux: run uname -m; x86_64 means x64, aarch64 means ARM64. These kits support only the listed architectures.
Before you start
- Download the version that matches your operating system and processor.
- Plug in your USB security key. The activation tool detects it automatically.
- Have your email address ready if you want to link the key to it, or choose anonymous activation.
After downloading
macOS
Extract the ZIP and connect your key. Double-click install.command. A Terminal window runs setup and waits for a keypress before closing. Then double-click activate.app to open the activation window. If macOS says it cannot verify the developer, dismiss the prompt and go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway next to the file’s name. You may need to confirm with your password or Touch ID. Do this separately for each file the first time it runs.
Windows
Extract all files from the ZIP and connect your key. Double-click install.bat. A console window runs setup and waits for a keypress before closing. Then open Activate Dongle (Activate Dongle.vbs) to start activation. The executables are unsigned. If SmartScreen shows “Windows protected your PC,” select “More info,” then “Run anyway.”
Linux
Extract the ZIP and connect your key. Open a terminal in the extracted folder and run ./install.sh, then ./activate.sh. The second command opens the activation window. Installation may request sudo to set USB device permissions.

Set up your PIN and identity
The tool asks you to choose a PIN if the key does not already have one. Your PIN is not sent anywhere. Choose email verification with a one-time code, or activate anonymously without an email address.

Touch the key when prompted
Follow the activation window and touch your security key when requested. Keep it connected until activation finishes.

Use hardware identity in Witness
Open the Witness extension and select hardware identity. Keep your activated key connected while recording.
Existing keys and troubleshooting
My key is already activated
If the key already has a PIN, the activation tool offers options to change only the PIN or move the key to a different email address or anonymous use. Follow the tool’s prompts.
I closed the tool before finishing
You can run the tool again. It checks which steps are complete and resumes without losing progress. If the problem continues, contact support and describe the message you saw.
“This dongle has not been set up correctly”
This key has not completed manufacturing setup. Contact the person or team who supplied it.
Extract the ZIP and keep its files together. The kit contains no secrets and can be kept or shared with a colleague who needs to activate their own key. Read READ ME FIRST.txt before starting.
