Add witness from the Chrome Web Store
The button above opens the listing in a new tab. Click 'Add to Chrome' and confirm the permissions prompt. Nothing to unzip, no developer mode, and Chrome updates the extension for you.

Pin the extension to your toolbar
Open the puzzle-piece menu in Chrome's toolbar and pin witness. You start every recording yourself, so a visible icon is the difference between a one-click record and a hunt through the menu.

Open ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and press record
Choose the free software identity when prompted. Your first Witness Record is signed on your device before you export anything.
That is the whole install. On the free tier every record is signed locally and hash-chained, so any later edit is detectable — free proves nothing was changed. The Verified tier adds an email-checked identity that proves it was you.
Hardware identity and the native host
Not on the critical path. Skip this entirely unless your organisation has been issued AuthentAI PUF/PAC hardware and requires a hardware-rooted identity on every record.

Confirm you actually need it
Free and Verified identity need no installer at all. Hardware identity is a procurement decision, not an onboarding step.

Install the signed native host for your OS
A notarized .pkg on macOS, a signed installer on Windows, a .deb or .rpm on Linux. One download, one double-click, one confirmation.

Plug in the device and let witness detect it
The extension polls for the host and flips from 'not installed' to 'ready' on its own. No browser restart, no hand-editing a manifest.

Choose hardware identity when you record
If the device is absent, witness never silently downgrades. It asks you to choose free or verified identity explicitly, so the provenance claim stays honest.
Even on the hardware tier, only a SHA-256 digest is passed to the local host. Conversation content is not part of the native-messaging path.
